Raw is better .. For nutrition . That goes for many foods Americans think are "nasty". If I'm ever lost on Alaska .. I hope bear tell me .. Jump in rivers and get? all wet.. Exposure is how I'll die ... Not starvation . Stay dry .. Stay alive. I assume he got a raging fire going ... And showed him dry himself and clothing .. I hope. Cool show .. We fished for five days in Alaska June 2011. Three days for halibut in Cooks inlet out of Homer, One day fly out for sockeye salmon at wolverine creek and one day drift boat fishing king salmon.

I see. So if it's not homer next time, what's the plan? I know many people who went up and chased fish across the state, usually in a race to get all 5 species of salmon, but i suppose you could do it for anything. Salmon is definitely about timing, but halibut success can be affected by timing also, for example, in PWS. Generally, it's easier to get a lot of butts earlier in the season when they all? funnel in and more concentrated, later they start spreading out inside the sound

@littlegoobie We used three different boats and captains but we were stuck with the same charter outfit. We fished for big halibut in shallow waters? in the morning and then moved to the chicken patch to get our limits at the end of the day. The captains and deck hands were great guys. We threw back a lot of little ones.

@NCUWHdiverdave it's not homer that's the problem, there are plenty of big fish there. the problem is the boat you went with wasn't willing to run out to bigger fish. It's the worst when people go on a boat where the policy is anything caught stays onboard so you coudl very easily end up with 15lbs of halibut fillets and they say you're done. on the up side, it gives you a? good reason to make the trip up again.

@ NCUWHdiverdave Homer is actually a? excellent place for Halibut however many charter companies dont want to take you after the big ones...they rather you limit out with your 2 halibut. Next time you go to Alaska try Deep Creek or Ninilchik. Homer is a big tourist trap for Halibut fishing that they do not care to ensure you get quality fish.

@spoungebob29 Alaska would be much better off if the replace the fish limit with a size limit. A person that can only keep one fish would be more likely to keep fishing and try to keep these Big Old Gals. We have even taken it a step further. We keep? 50lbs halibut in the freezer and offer to anyone on the boat willing to release a Big Female Halibut.

We have come to the realization that we must join together to release these Big Females to protect our resource. The recent attempt to put Charter regulations in place to limit Sport Fisherman to one halibut is counter to protecting our resource.

If you don't fly fish you probably won't like it as much as myself, however because the streams flowing in/out of Ilianma are literally unfished, you can cast 10 feet? and end up with a 15 pound rainbow on the fly. I think the Nush is somewhere near Bristol Bay, so that may give you a general idea of where it is.

Because it is so isolated you see very few people, but essentially year round in that lake and the attatched streams there are White Sturgeon, Northern? Pike, Lake Trout, Rainbows, Grayling, Sockeyes, (rarely Kings), and I've even heard of people catching Burbot. The Nushagak flows into it and you can charter a plane there from Anchorage if you want to give it a shot.

Have you fished along Lake Ilianma? You probably know it's one of the largest lakes in the world, but it has (and I'm not kidding) the biggest freshwater fish you'll ever see. While fishing there with my godfather (a bush pilot) we were trolling in his plane and landed 60 pound pike, and wading into the streams fly fishing, when you? cast it into a 3 foot deep bit within seconds a 10-20 pound rainbow would be on the other end, and I'm not kidding.

@sengx Yes they can, I have seen one 36 inches pulled out of there before, most though arnt much more then maybe 20-25 inches on average. LOTS of pike though, worth hiking back too. Fish the weed beds (need to rent a canoe) I have had the best luck with fake rubber weedless frogs.?

I think that is probably true. In June after they spawn I think they get a bit sluggish. We fished? Alexander each of the last 2 Sundays and its been dead. I think the weather has to do with alot of it.

You really? just have to show up and give it a shot. Nothing is garanteed. Your best chance would be to go to Fishermens Terminal in Seattle WA in mid May and pound the docks. Good Luck
